History of SPE Lagos Nigeria Section 61

Society of Petroleum Engineers Lagos Section 61

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Lagos Section 61 was established as a Section under SPE International on March 26, 1973. The Section is situated in Lagos State, Nigeria, and boasts a membership strength of over 2,800 members as of YE2022 (Students and Professionals).

The mission of the Society is to connect our global community of engineers, scientists and related technology professionals to exchange knowledge, innovate and advance their technical and professional competence regarding the exploration, development, and production of oil & gas and related energy resources to achieve a safe, secure and sustainable energy future.

Key programs of the Section to achieve her mission and vision include Monthly Technical Meetings, the Distinguished Lecturer Series and several initiatives geared towards our Students and Young Professionals demographic. The Section actively supports her student programs by providing technical resource persons, annual subsidies and scholarships.

SPE Lagos Section currently has six (6) student chapters under its purview, namely the University of Ibadan Student Chapter (UI), University of Lagos Student Chapter (UNILAG), Lagos State University Student Chapter (LASU), Covenant University Student Chapter (CU), Obafemi Awolowo Student Chapter (OAU), and the Federal University of Technology Akure Student Chapter (FUTA).

The Section also spearheads the Yusuf Matashi "Catch Them Young" program (YMCTY) along with other Sections in Nigeria, which aims to introduce the vision of SPE International to elementary and high school students. The primary objective of the YMCTY program is to inspire an interest in pursuing careers within the energy industry among high school students. Key components of the YMCTY program encompass career talks, shedding light on the prospects and prerequisites for a career in the oil and gas industry, and visits to industry sites where feasible. Furthermore, the program includes essay and quiz competitions to identify the top three students from the Section, who are subsequently presented with awards during the Section's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Since its inception in 1973, the Section has been led by 47 Section chairpersons who have managed its affairs. Presently, Mr. Oluwabiyi Awotiku serves as the 48th Chairperson.
